About In CommUNITY

In CommUNITY is a program focused on promoting better health and well-being for LGBTQ+ people of every age throughout Miami-Dade County, FL. Recognizing that LGBTQ+ individuals often face significant hurdles in accessing healthcare and can experience adverse physical and mental health outcomes, our mission is to tackle these issues head-on.

Mission

Our mission is to integrate the experiences and voices of the LGBTQ+ community into ongoing efforts to address systemic discrimination and social determinants of health (SDOH). We aim to create inclusive and empowering spaces and services that lead to intergenerational thriving for the Miami-Dade LGBTQ+ community.

Goals

  • Positive Health Outcomes: We aim to produce positive health outcomes across the lifespan, addressing both physical and psychological well-being.
  • Improvements in Social Determinants of Health: Our project strives to make a lasting impact on social determinants of health affecting Miami-Dade County's LGBTQ+ population.
  • Replicable Model: Beyond Miami-Dade County, our goal is to create a sustainable and replicable model that can be applied to LGBTQ+ populations in different geographical locations and extended to other vulnerable communities.

Approach

  1. Place-Based Structural Interventions: Working closely with the LGBTQ+ Miami-Dade County community and our partners, we will co-design targeted interventions to improve access to quality healthcare and other essential services.
  2. Community-Based and Community-Engaged Research: Employing a mixed-methods approach, we will engage in research that involves and benefits the LGBTQ+ community directly, ensuring our efforts are collaborative and respectful.
  3. Shared Data System: To enhance the sustainability and impact of our efforts, we will develop a shared data system. This includes a user-friendly data dashboard featuring LGBTQ+ demographic indicators across various factors, improving existing data collection tools.
